FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Which GENDER is better MALE or FEMALE in a German Shepherd?
Either the male or female make great companions. It;s just the preference of the owner as to which gender you prefer.
There are subtle differences in the gender.
Although I may add males are territorial and are very protective of their home and property!
Females are more protective of their family, with that said not to say males are not as they too are protective of family!
I'll bet that if you were actually truthful with yourself about which gender you really want, boy dog or girl dog, that chances are high that your past memories of a childhood dog or perhaps a friend's or family member is what is really influencing your decision right now.
ARE GERMAN SHEPHERD GOOD FAMILY PETS?
Remember that German Shepherds are great dogs
-but they are not for everyone- no more so than would be a Newfoundland. a Chihuahua, or a Jack Russel Terrier - not every dog breed is a good fit for every home and that;s just the way that it is-so do your research first.
German Shepherds are really incredible dogs, but like i said not for everyone and if you are thinking of getting one as you are on my site I Highly encourage you to do all the research you can about them- ahead of time !
There's a lot to think about. A German Shepherd Dog can be an excellent choice of family dog- if they're with the right family!.
And some people wonder about mixing GSDS and KIDS. Are German Shepherds good family pets?= if I have kids?

German Shepherds can get along really well with kids - especially if they are socialized with them starting at a early age. The earlier the better in fact.
It is very important that you take the time to make sure that your German Shepherd puppy is comfortable around human beings of all ages . shapes. sizes, and colors.
You also should introduce them to other pets and dogs. The importance of dog training and proper socialization simply can't be overstated. Your German Shepherd needs it desperately.
Also don't forget how big and strong a German Shepherd can get to be as an adult, If you have very small children it could potentially be a problem for them if you don't supervise the dog and the kids together. And if you have a small puppy , you don't want to leave it unsupervised with small kids either. Better safe then sorry. Remember to that  this is a fairly long lived animal and if all goes well you can expect to have this dog in your life for 10- 13 years.
Something else I would like to remind everybody about is just how smart these dogs are. these are very intelligent animals.. Out of all the hundreds of documented dog breeds on the planet, the GSD is rated as the 3rd most intelligent!
These dogs need to be tested mentally as well as physically every day. And this is one of those things that many first time GSD owners are simply not aware of. You need to work these dogs brains as well as their muscles to have the happiest GSD possible. Mental exercise simply can't be overstated to keep these little canine Einsteins in top notch shape.

IS IT HARD TO HOUSE TRAIN MY COASTAL ROOTS GERMAN SHEPHERD PUPPY?
I find that crate training a puppy is the easiest way.
Feed your puppy 3 times a day, do not leave food out after the puppy has had his/her fill, after the puppy has finished eating, take him/her out outdoors and usually 15-20 minutes later the puppy will go.Before you go to bed at night.... take puppy outdoors, wait till him/her is done, bring him/her in and bed him/her down in his/her crate for the night .When you awake
in AM take the puppy from the crate and take him/her straight outdoors. ALWAYS make sure you praise your puppy he/she
loves to know they have done a good thing. Another thing when you go to let he/she out say, do you want to go pee. Pup will learn to understand going out side means to do he/she business, and take he/she to same spot while they are being house trained! They catch on very very fast!

German Shepherds tend to bark or howl either when left alone for too long and they lack stimulation or are scared, or if what they perceive to be a threat is approaching them or their family. They can be very vocal at times as they love to talk! lol
